Take the Long Way Home — St. Martins to Saint John

This beautiful drive through the countryside will take about 25 minutes longer than the direct route 111 to Saint John. We think it’s absolutely worth it, especially in the fall.

From St. Martins, head west on Main Street to the junction of Main and Route 111. Instead of turning left to return to the city, turn right at Spinney’s Seafood Market. You may want to stop there to take home some famous Bay of Fundy lobster — cooked or live.

You may also want to take a few minutes to check out Fundy Woods Campgrounds & Cottages just ahead on the right. This new campground has wonderful views of the Bay, wooded lots and ocean-view hiking trails.

This drive should be called the Land of Roadside Lakes. They’re beautiful and many are visible from the road. At Upperton, turn left onto 820 to Upham. The road winds through farm country and scenic valleys.

You’ll want to stop at Barnesville, stretch your legs, and explore the Hammond River.

Next you’ll pass by the three Loch Lomond lakes. These large lakes are pristine, scenic, and swimmable. Spread a blanket on the beach and enjoy!

Second Lake: Follow Barnesville Road. Turn left down Second Lake Road. Go a short distance and on the left-hand side you’ll see a sandy area with a dirt parking lot.

First Lake: Drive down Barnesville Road. Once you see Baxters Corner Store you have gone a few yards too far. Turn around and go down the road just after it. On the left-hand side you’ll see a sign for Sands Road. Drive to the end (it’s a very short road.)
